As a nurse, I always knew when women were feeling better in the hospital. They would ask for their perfume, lipstick or blush. Medicine for the soul!

Fragrance Memories

My first fragrance and still my favorite today is Miss Dior by Christian Dior……I remember a good friend of mine saying to me that he knew when I was in the room without even turning around! Not because of the strength of the fragrance but by its distinctive “notes”. He said it was “my” fragrance….and brought the “me” in me out!

I am a traditionalist and perfume fragrance always meant- and still does- a special occasion – my mother going out with my father, my sister on a big date or even my Aunt Dolly in our home for a visit. It is that special care you take to finish off your outfit, subtly creating a presence with an unmistakable sign that tonight is special.

My longtime favorite is still Channel # 5. It was given to me for the first time by my first boyfriend as a Christmas gift at age 17. I still remember being impressed that an 18 year old boy would purchase me such a nice gift. The relationship was short but the Perfume memory lives on. After all of these years, I still love it and purchase it from time to time along with some of the newer fragrances by Channel.

My first boyfriend wore vetiver by Guerlain. He was French and sexy and he wore it every day. In his presence I would walk a little closer or lean in just a bit, entering his personal space to capture its bouquet. It was a magical scent. When we broke up- I sprayed it on my pillow so I could smell him. But as time went on I sprayed it on myself, not to remind myself of him- but to feel sexy and wonderful myself.

I like Rapture by Victoria’s Secret. I don’t smell it on me but my family says they always know when I’ve been in a room. It’s not an overpowering fragrance but subtle. When my daughter went to get our dog Coco at the shelter, I gave her a t shirt of mine sprayed with Rapture to take to the shelter. He immediately came to me when she brought him to our home.

I am now in my sixties and every now and then when I see a dark blue bottle, my thoughts take me back to my favorite fragrance of all time, Evening in Paris. I was in my teens when I received my very first bottle of Evening in Paris and the moment that I unscrewed the top and inhaled it, I was in love. Every time that I inhaled it, my mind filled up with dreams of travel to foreign places. That was a long time ago and I would give anything to have just one more sniff of that magic elixir.

My first scent memory is hugging my father in his suit when he came home from work. He smelled like wool, tobacco and Vetiver. To this day that smells like love and safety.

As to fragrance memories, I won’t put mine in print but I’d be happy to tell you about it (over cocktails!). It involves Shalimar….

The first girl I ever said “I love you” too was an angel. But what I remember most was the scent of her perfume when I knocked on the door to pick her up, Shalamar swept me off my feet. To this day that sent takes me back to the knock on the door.

I was at Starbucks and a man approached me and ask me what I was wearing. Valentino I said. Can I sit beside you for the rest of the day he said? I’m sure he would have sat with me all night had I given him any sign.

The chemical reaction between Elizabeth Ardens Red Door EDP & my chemistry is amazing. I discovered when I’m in a stressful situation like a board room meeting, Red Door EDP defuses stuffy or intimidating people into purring kittens. I’ve watched this effect happen hundreds of times. Now that’s what you call a signature fragrance. I call it my secret weapon.
My daughter works with the public. She’s told me many times just before a customer comes to her for assistance, she smells the customer wearing my fragrance and it’s like receiving a warm hug from me. Fragrance has such a powerful influence on people Camano Island WA |
