The product idea started the day my daughter Josephine asked me why her fragrances didn’t last long and why no one had innovated against what she thought was a needed solution. It turns out she isn’t the only unhappy consumer in the category, it is the number one unmet need of the category.
The FragranceLock™ name became a no brainer after a multitude of conversations (and other names which will remain mysteries) with really smart people. The product name not only makes sense, it says what it does. The simple dictionary definition of lock as a verb is “fasten or secure (something) with a lock”. Once your fragrance is applied to your skin and connects with your special body chemistry making the scent unique to you, we wanted to lock that fragrance in place. Sometimes, the obvious is the best direction.
I’ve always been fascinated by doorways and locks. They can be the beginning or the end of an adventure, hold something near and dear behind them and have always created curiosity. Even in Paris, while crossing the Ponts des Arts bridge, you find thousands of locks reflecting love, passion, hope, dreams, adventure and love lost. All of them memories of the heart. Just like fragrance conjures memories for all of us, locks are a symbol of treasures, eternity, and possibility.
Our icon was inspired by traditions of artfully creative fragrance bottles, especially those with the puffs. Delicate, impressive and statement making. We wanted to bridge nostalgia with a modern twist.
We wanted our packaging to signal something new…same old glass bottle…not for us. The sleek black matte aluminum bottle is eco-friendly, made of 100% recycled aluminum and is 100% recyclable. It was selected because of its lighter weight and is more efficient in logistics and transport, reducing carbon emissions, not to mention shatter proof if dropped. Unlike traditional fragrance bottles that end up being dust collectors, this one can be reused after a good cleaning.
Here are some of the things that inspired us.
